The University of Berkeley recently conducted a study on the state’s lane splitting by reviewing almost 6,000 motorcycle-involved traffic collisions (some fatal, some without a scratch), of which 1,000 of them involved the act of lane splitting. California is the only state that expressly allows lane. VAT § 1252 states the following: Motorcyclists should not overtake stopped or occupied vehicles in the same lane; Motorcycle riders should not ride between two lanes of traffic, adjacent lines, or rows of vehicles According to CBS 2 New York reporting, however, it appears unlikely that New York City would change this ban on lane splitting. Lane splitting and lane sharing sound the same, but they’re not. GREY States: Lane splitting is not specifically illegal, but neither is it legal. But Texas just passed a law banning the practice, being the latest to do so. A few years ago, California passed a law that allows some degree of lane splitting to prevent gridlock. Even when traveling at low speeds, motorcycle accidents can result in severe injuries. While North Carolina law does not speak specifically on lane splitting, it does talk about lane sharing.
